Meet Michael Ruppert, a former Los Angeles police officer turned independent reporter, who predicted the current financial crisis in his self-published newsletter, From the Wilderness. Accomplishing this at a time when most Wall Street and Washington analysts were still in denial. Director Chris Smith has shown an affinity for outsiders in films like American Movie and The Yes Men. In Collapse, he departs stylistically from his past documentaries by interviewing Ruppert in a format that recalls the work of Errol Morris and Spalding Gray.
Why It's FilmBuff
Collapse is a product of a 14 hour interview with a conspiracy theorist, and well...we're really into that. Also, we love that the film does not take a stance on whether Michael Ruppert's views are the ramblings of a madman or if they are the voice of reason in a world of insanity. The idea that the latter could be true is a terrifying notion that you will have to watch and decide whether to accept it or not. In a world shattered by a financial crisis, this movie may not convince you of anything, but it will open your mind to possibilities you could not imagine.
